The AAT Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping is a new flexible home study qualification launched in September 2022 which can be studied via distance learning with a personal tutor or by self – studying. Previously known as the AAT Access Award in Bookkeeping (Level 1).
AAT Access qualifications are an entry point for students who need to develop their finance or business skills. These qualifications are designed to give students the introductory knowledge and confidence to take on a higher level AAT qualification and to progress in their lives and careers.

Assessment Criteria

Three units are assessed individually in end-of-unit assessments. This qualification also includes a synoptic assessment that draws on and assesses knowledge and understanding from across a number of units.

AAT Level 1 Certification in Bookkeeping Course

The AAT Level 1 Award in Bookkeeping qualification covers a range of skills and the relevant supporting knowledge in one mandatory unit: Whilst completing this AAT Level 1 qualification you will develop an understanding of the role of the bookkeeper, including the need for confidentiality and accuracy in your work. You will learn underpinning theory including how to identify assets, liabilities, income and expenses; how to identify profit and loss; and the differences between trading for cash and trading on credit. You will also develop the skills to process customer and supplier transactions, to enter receipts and payments into the cash book and check amounts against the bank statement in preparation for bank reconciliation. You will be introduced to the dual effect of transactions. This is a fundamental underpinning concept for double-entry bookkeeping and will support students who go on to study bookkeeping at Foundation level. The skills developed in this qualification can lead to employment in junior or supporting administrative roles in companies across a wide range of sectors, for example, as a:
  • trainee bookkeeper
  • accounts administrator
  • billing/payments administrator/coordinator
  • accounts junior
  • accounts receivable/payable assistant
  • procurement and finance assistant
  • assistant cashier

What will this qualification lead to?

The accountancy and business skills developed by studying this qualification will enable a student to seek employment with confidence and/or to progress to the next level of learning. A student completing this qualification will develop skills in double-entry bookkeeping and will understand how to use journals, control accounts and a trial balance. Students will also gain an understanding of accounting software packages, how to process financial information in accordance with company procedures and schedules, and how to provide information to colleagues, suppliers and/or customers as required.
